This is only one of many different legends around the true origin
of the cocktail. A fact instead is that the cocktail is an American
tradition. It seems to have its roots at the time of colonialism
because at the time alcohol was of a rather low quality. So it was
mixed with different juices and got like that a different and better
taste. In America, only gangsters and thugs used to drink these
cocktails but after a while the cocktail found it’s way to
Great Britain. There, during the Roaring Twenties, the cocktail
became an in-scene drink for the high-society. The cocktail became
bigger and got new ingredients, champagne for example.
After this high-time the popularity of the cocktail fell immediately
though it never died.
In the 80ies the cocktail had its comeback and is up to today popular.
